Mid Range Cards Blows

Saturday, July 5, 2008

I blew last month’s allowance on this:

Because I was getting tired of this:

The 8500GT was giving me choppy frames while playing MP in UT3 and anything associated with it’s new engine, which are most of the games I’m playing now. Mostly I wanted to be able to play Crysis without feeling like I’m watching a slideshow with a 56k dial up connection. Considering the 8600gt is the spiritual successor of the mid end 7600gt of SM 3 era, I have to say I was disappointed at the performance I get. If it’s not for the ddr3 memory I don’t think the 8600gt would have any very significant head over its low end 8500gt cousin as far’s performance is concerned.

I’m not going to make a point by point specs comparison but let me just say that the reason I’m posting this is that I’m really sad that manufacturers are neglecting the mid range cards in favor of stripped down versions of high end cards, like the 8800GT w/ less VRAM which looks AND performs more like the mid range cards of yore. If this trend continues beggars wannabe-gamers like yours truly are fucked.

ZSa here

u got the 8800GT? dayum! i don't how much it is retailing there but the card still holds the centre show peice position in more that one computer shop over here.

when the big hype abt DX10 and it's unified shaders came out i was really sceptical about the first generation of cards that would support it. i think i'll have to wait for the next generation , perhaps out around Xmass, to see what DX10 can really translate into gaming experience on the monitor as opposed to on paper.

it's simply not prudent financially for ATI and Nvidia to develop several mid range cards so they just strip down or cripple a high range card. This has been the trend for the past 3 generations. i guess is this is the reason nvidia don't develop *700's (6700 or 7700 or 8700).

on a personal level i've always felt that buy graphic cards feels like whoring yourself out. most game companies and OS developers always stress on maxisming performance through more and more outrageous hardware. how is the poor gamer gonna cope? what about laying equal importance to refinement as well as "pushng new boundaries"? i think game developers should stress more on the scalability of their games. a beggar like me with 6200 dinosaur should be able to play the same games as the loaded gamers running a 3 way SLi.

how does the 8800GT OC in the Dili summer? from the photo, it looks like XFX has taken a the stock nivida card with the stock HSF and just put their label on it. i don't see a gram of copper for the VRAM.

when i'm a millionaire i'll buy both of us ego machines...completely over the top hardware with all the fancy cooling and bling-bling. just for the heck of it. ahaha

are you retarded, tell me, seriously, coz you certainly are if you think i'm gonna blow 24000 on a card. fucking retard begger gamer. click on the damn picture and read the label after you rub your eye mucus out and you'll see that it says 8600GT. i mean, look at the the pin sized fan even XFX manage to put wider aluminium on an 8800, an they call that active cooling??!!. i'm not going to oc till i have one of those arctic coolers and computerwallas round here knows what a thermal paste is all about.

Dx10 is a system hog, fortunately i wasn't buying the card cos of it. the fact is that i have really no choice, it was either spend a couple more gs on a 7900gts or this. i was just protecting my investment gamingwise actually. after all, THIS is a mid range card in name.

you know, lots of people complain about the gfx settings in games being rigid and that their system can't take this or that crap, in fact thats the main argument people have in favor of switching to consoles.but the truth is that if you built a system with say 30000 right now (which will get you a new ps3), you can pretty much get decent fps on most shits developers throw out there.problem is that everyone wants the eye candy but everyone can't afford them. i guess you have to know on which component to cash out on and on which to be a tightass. i mean i still have my athlon x2 4000+ which is like 2/3 years old and im still pretty much satisfied with it. meanwhile consider the poor shmuck goes to nehru place with his life savings, wiseass compwalla lays a c2d infront of him and tells him its the bigest hit since p4 and bam for 50000 he's got himself a low end c2d, an integrated intel gfx chip with 256 shared memory and as a cream on top,a shiny big tft monitor.goes home loads the latest NFS and gets a blank screen after the EA logo.

wtf! i thought u were moving up.

i thought u got the 8800GT. moving from 8500GT to 8600GT is hardly a step up. ya should have got a 8600GTS atleast. i know how much u like playing these games, it would have been worth it. don't tell u don't have the bloody dough. don't gimme the beggar gamer business. u can go on ur lil south Indian honeymoons.

personally, i choose higher frames over HDR and all that eye candy shite, especially on FPSs. sure it's nice to see the lines on a Korean's soldier's face when you strangle him, or all that fairytale magik spell effects, but i'm not willing to dish out my parent's money on eye candy. the bare minimum is good enough for me. i can't take the guilt.

brother, volumetric HDR is defacto in most or all the games (xepting sports and racing of course)on this side of 2005.i mean, i'm just trying to get forum people to talk to me without having to let them try not to be too condescending everytime i give out my specs, thats all. i know some day i'm going to be able to buy shitloads of cards with the money i earn, i'm just not sure i'll want to do it then as much as i want to do it now. i mean, 5k a year for the thing i'm most happy about buying isn't gonna induce any guilty conscience on me, no way.
