Tonight

Although the element of dub and industrial drew me in on FF when I first came across their piece “ Ulysses” on one of those music playing Myspace page , after listening through a couple of tracks a couple of times from this year’s “Tonight” , I thought they were pretty funky as well. Emotionally, from the first time you read the track titles, the album has a fun maybe sarcastic, read The Ting Tings, but vastly positive vibe about it. While popular dub funk influences like the ting tings featured distinctive rhythm with pulse driven drum loops, most of FF songs have flat distortion working in the background of upbeat constantly changing drum works and something that almost sound like chimes. Although I inanely lean towards three cords guitar works with lots of noise, I have to admit tracks like “What she came for” could really sound like something unique, certainly distinctive and certainly enjoyable. And maybe I’m growing up/out of my Cobian-esque fixation.

I always feel that the process of making music have to be a lot about having fun and doing it for the love of it. I think that FF actually incorporate a lot of it’s feel good attitude into this album without sounding poppy or cheesy. Which is quite an achievement in itself, considering how thin the line can be between sounding fresh and sounding completely hip hoppy in these kinds of ambitious sounds. I guess what I’m trying to say is FF is kind of contagious if you’re here to enjoy rather then analyze.

hello vante,
mmm splitting ur stuff between blogger and LJ is kinda problematic for some ppl. why do u wanna segregate? u wanna post ur "proper" entires here and rant in LJ? u think the utterance of the two blogs are all that different?

The Ting Tings annoy me. The choice of beats and the whole delivery is just not for my ears. FF gets a lil beat orientated at times too. The high treble mixed guitars cut through the mix-it's very angular and very Brit. yeah, up-beat and "feel good attitude" would definitely be ways i'd also describe them, but i don't see them going beyond the Tings Tings.
i don't care too much about technical sophistication , and i don't look to FF for that. FF is a self-conscious band, and it's worth listening too because of they acknowledge the pretensions of the music industry and rock and roll. The very orchestrated album cover u posted is indicative of this.
i still place them on the same plane as the Ting Tings, it's just the acknowledgment to their that is different. but essentially they are listenable to a certain degree as long as one doesn't think too hard about what one is listening to.

ukno, i often step out in the morning and when the grime and smog hits me, i get frustrated and out of place and evil thoughts starts swiming in my head but at the same time i'm sitting here listening to some music or read some books and i thought hey thats pretty funky and i want to write about all that. i have such diffrent thought processes running through my head at tyhe same time that i just want to be two different people writing about different things. and at the same time i just want to be a normal person who is spontaneous and doesn't hold a grudge with the way life flows so, i'm just contradicting myself through different outlets. however, i cannot escape the fact that i'm only one person, so whatever i put out there is going to have connections in some level, obviously they're not all that different.

i thought FF is a pretty straight forward outfit actually. i thought they pretty much go out there with a clear cut agenda in mind, and do what you would expect them to do.maybe they don't have the spontaneity of RHCP or radical propaganda like RATM. but you can't deny they're pretty distinctive far's sounds are concerned.
